SmartPeach provides early warnings to peach producers for extreme weather phenomena

SmartPeach is working on solutions that will allow peach producers to better protect their trees from extreme weather phenomena. More specifically, one of the services that SmartPeach provides to peach producers is a detailed 3-day weather forecast at parcel level, which includes an early warning system for extreme weather phenomena.

During the last decades, the impact of climate change on agriculture has significantly increased, with extreme weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, hail and snowfall, extreme temperatures, drought periods etc., becoming more frequent and more intense. This situation has affected food production, leading to partial or even total crop loss. rendered many crops less productive; this highlights the need for improving crop varieties so that they can withstand the effects of climate change.


As most crops, peaches are exposed to such adverse conditions, with farmers having almost no way to protect their crop. While climate-smart farming is working on solutions that make crop more resistant to such situations, these solutions are usually not applied commercially at large scale. In addition, in the case of peach, researchers are working on the genetic modification of varieties, which will allow peach trees to have increased resistance to extremely low temperatures, dry conditions and even UV-B radiation.

SmartPeach is working on solutions that will allow peach producers to better protect their trees from extreme weather phenomena. What differentiates this services from competitive services is that (a) it makes use of various meteorological data, including data acquired by the constantly increasing number of telemetric stations of gaiasense, (b) it uses multiple meteorological models and (c) it informs users about each possible extreme weather phenomenon, no matter how low the possibility is.

In this way, peach producers can be prepared for any extreme scenario at any given time, and take all necessary (and available) measures to protect their crops. For example, based on the warnings that they receive, they can arrange their agricultural activities accordingly.
