Farmers Urged to Fill Propane Tanks Early to Maximize Harvest Efficiency and Savings
Propane Council recommends early tank fills to secure affordable fuel, reduce risk, and support high-yield operations
RICHMOND, VA (July 2025) - As harvest season approaches, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is encouraging America's farmers to prepare early by filling their propane tanks now. With increased input costs, unpredictable weather, and fluctuating fuel prices, early tank fills offer growers a smart way to save money, avoid supply disruptions, and ensure a smoother, more profitable harvest.
More than 80 percent of grain dryers in the U.S. are powered by propane, and for good reason. Propane delivers cost-effective, reliable performance for drying grain, heating livestock buildings, powering irrigation systems, backup power, and more. Because propane is stored on-site and its quality doesn't degrade over time, farmers can fill tanks ahead of busy seasons for use when it's needed most. And new propane-powered grain dryers are up to 50% more energy efficient than older models, helping to reduce over-drying while preserving grain quality.
"Planning ahead is one of the most effective tools a farmer can use," said Mike Newland, director of agriculture business development at PERC. "By filling propane tanks early, producers can take control of energy needs and avoid price hikes and delivery delays that can accompany peak demand."
Most propane suppliers offer early tank fill programs to make it easy for farmers to lock in lower seasonal rates before autumn demand spikes, eliminating delivery delays and keeping operations running efficiently. By filling tanks when fuel costs are lowest, often during the summer months, farmers can optimize savings and harvest planning.
To help farmers estimate propane needs for harvest or grain drying, PERC offers a free Grain Drying Calculator. Visit www.Propane.com/Agriculture for more tools, resources, and incentives, and contact your local propane supplier to discuss early tank fill programs.
