Mutational breeding is a powerful tool to characterize plant gene function, specific biological processes, and correlations between genotypes and phenotypic traits, and has been widely used in crop trait improvement.

Plant mutations can be induced by physical stimuli (e.g., X-rays, α- and β-particles, fast neutrons, and ultraviolet light), which often result in chromosomal changes, or by chemical treatments (e.g., ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)) which often result in point mutations. Alternatively, mutations can also be introduced through advanced genetic engineering technologies such as CRISPR/CAS9 and RNAi.

Mutations can not only be easily detected by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods, but also be screened by high-throughput technologies such as whole genome sequencing.
