Introducing the most effective burp suppressant for cows: Brominata™

A rare win-win-win for the planet: simple, cost-effective, hugely impactful

Brominata is a red seaweed-based supplement that allows cows to retain more energy from their feed instead of burping it into the atmosphere

  • Farmers add a handful of Brominata to cows’ usual feed

  • Cattle benefit from increased energy availability from their feed

  • Consumers gain ability to choose brands honestly committed to zero carbon foods featuring real meat and dairy

  • Corporations support the "just transition" model of sustainability by enabling farm families to continue their livelihoods while adopting sustainable practices

The Cow

Cattle are remarkable creatures. They convert ordinary grass into delicious foods. The problem is that this conversion process results in up to 12% energy loss through gassy burps. The nutritional waste from burps contributes about 2 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, more than 4% of all greenhouse gas emissions globally.

The Remedy

Brominata is a 100% natural digestive aid that helps cows derive more nutritional value, especially energy, from their feed. Brominata is made from a whole plant with nothing added and nothing taken away. Blue Ocean Barns’s San Diego facilities are USDA Certified Organic and Brominata is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).

The Drivers of Adoption

We work with food industry leaders who are serious about meeting their sustainability commitments. We are deploying Brominata at select farms in 2022 to help customers plan a rollout strategy across their entire supply chains. Deploying Brominata on-farm requires no capital equipment or additional worker training. Farms of all sizes and types are able to adopt Brominata, making it an equitable and inclusive natural remedy.

The Proof

Our corporate partners demand auditable evidence of greenhouse gas reductions within their supply chains. To facilitate this, Blue Ocean Barns has a registry account with VCS, a major global carbon standard. The account holds credits subjected to a rigorous verification process by an ISO-accredited third-party verifier, including gas readings from GreenFeed machines (pictured). Blue Ocean Barns is developing a project to verify carbon reductions under VM0041, Methodology for the Reduction of Enteric Methane Emissions from Ruminants Through the Use of Feed Ingredients.
